A Message From Kathleen A. Kramer, 2025 IEEE President & Chief Executive Officer, and Sophia A. Muirhead, IEEE Executive Director & Chief Operating Officer
Across our global organization, the year 2025 was marked by successful efforts to work together more intentionally and effectively as One IEEE, strengthening our strategic focus and increasing our breadth of change-making collaborations, including a highlighted commitment to efforts in innovation, public policy and education.
By aligning leadership, resources and decision-making across organizational units within IEEE, we can apply and leverage collective expertise to invest in the broad range of technical, scientific and multidisciplinary fields that define IEEE’s global community, honor our heritage and better serve the public. This integrated approach, known as One IEEE, is strengthening IEEE’s ability to operate as a cohesive global organization and requires ongoing commitment as we accelerate mission‑driven, high-impact initiatives.
In the first year of the new 2025-2030 IEEE Strategic Plan and guided by it as a north star, leadership continued the ongoing work of strengthening coordinated priority‑setting and aligning outcomes across IEEE’s diverse and complex organization. This sustained effort has improved IEEE’s ability to act cohesively to ensure we remain the most trusted source of technical information, while we advance ethical and innovative technology development, expand interdisciplinary collaboration and support lifelong professional growth. Our impact grows as we empower our shared purpose.
IEEE public‑imperative activities are core to its identity as a public charity and serve where our expertise positions us to deliver the most impact. The emphasis on this aspect of our identity is part of an ongoing organizational transition and sustained commitment. Activities across realms, including humanitarian technology, STEM outreach, sustainability, public education and ethical technology development increase their impact by being recognized as driven by our core technical purpose and mission. An operational change of significance was the redesign of the budget process to align financial resources with impact-focused priorities. This ensures these programs are supported as foundational organizational infrastructure. This serves to strengthen public trust and creates meaningful pathways for students and young professionals to apply their knowledge and skills to real‑world challenges across IEEE fields of interest.
Education continues to be a defining focus. IEEE advanced a coordinated One IEEE strategy across the global learning continuum, aligning pre‑university STEM outreach, university programs, accreditation and professional development to build a cohesive ecosystem that supports the future STEM workforce and nurtures the next generation of leaders across technical and scientific fields.
IEEE’s global influence was further strengthened through its standards development, world‑leading conferences and trusted publications, which continued to shape emerging technologies and provide the technical foundation for innovation worldwide.
IEEE’s longstanding leadership in engineering, science and technology, combined with a passion to make a difference for humanity, continue to anchor its role in today’s critical technology debates, from AI safety and data governance to cybersecurity, quantum‑era security and infrastructure resilience. Decades of standards work, ethical frameworks and all-applying cross‑disciplinary expertise position IEEE to guide emerging technologies in ways that strengthen public trust and societal well‑being. This foundation keeps IEEE central as AI, quantum computing, next‑generation networks and other technologies emerge to reshape the future of global innovation.
2025 has catalyzed IEEE to lead with integrity, vision and unity. Together, the IEEE community — leaders, volunteers, members and staff — will continue to advance technology for humanity, strengthening the organization, empowering the global community and shaping a future grounded in ethical, sustainable and innovative technological progress.
