Meaningful Collaboration for the Public Good

In 2025, IEEE strengthened its role as a trusted, neutral voice in global technology policy, advancing critical standards and engaging with policymakers on issues ranging from AI governance to child protection. Through strategic advocacy, international collaboration and technical expertise, IEEE helped shape regulatory frameworks and informed policy decisions that will impact the future of technology and society worldwide.

IEEE-USA Advances Technology Policy Priorities

In 2025, IEEE-USA focused on key policy priorities to improve the innovation climate in the United States with input from America’s engineers and technology professionals. With the support of more than 150,000 individual professionals, IEEE-USA advocated for robust federal support for science and technology, including full funding for CHIPS (Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors) and Science Act programs and increased support for national science and technology initiatives. Additional priorities included providing an effective legal and regulatory framework for AI development.

AI Standards Added to Global Platform

IEEE’s portfolio of global AI-related standards was included in the new International AI Standards Exchange, a centralized repository designed to foster collaboration and responsible AI development worldwide. This inclusion reinforces IEEE’s efforts to make AI standards and guidance easily discoverable and accessible to policymakers, developers, regulators and other stakeholders seeking trusted, open and collaborative processes.

Indonesia Draws on IEEE 2089 Age-Appropriate Design Framework in New Online Child Protection Regulation

IEEE collaborated with Indonesian policymakers on the recently passed regulation on the Governance of Electronic Systems in Child Protection, the first of its kind regulation in Asia and the Global South. Drawing on IEEE standards on children’s data governance and age-appropriate design, including IEEE 2089™ and IEEE 2089.1™, the new law establishes enforceable requirements for digital platforms to protect children’s privacy, safety and well-being.

IEEE Leads Global Technology Policy Dialogues

IEEE is having an impact on the world stage as a thought leader in many critical areas facing the future of technology, the impact of AI and the importance of digital governance. The IEEE Standards Association led global dialogues on critical technology and policy issues, fostering collaboration and influencing the direction of technological advancements and their societal impact. Activities included:

  • International AI Standards Exchange dialogues at the ITU AI for Good Summit
  • Led six sessions at the European Dialogue on Internet Governance on topics including quantum technology, digital sovereignty and age verification 
  • Hosted sessions at the UN Science Summit and UN High-Level Political Forum on clean water and sustainable oceans
  • The UN World Summit on Information Society (WSIS)+20 High-Level Forum

IEEE Global Video Campaign Showcasing Member Impact Expands to New Regions

IEEE expanded its global video campaign featuring members from around the world describing in their own words how joining IEEE helped shape their careers and support their professional journeys. Commercials aired in Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, reaching diverse audiences with powerful testimonials that underscored IEEE’s role as a mission-driven community of passionate individuals committed to advancing technology and creating global impact.
